BIOGRAPHY
Stephen Schuster was born in Bavaria about 1840 and came to New York in
1852 with his parents Seymore and Zelia Schuster. Seymore Schuster
was born in Bavaria about 1806 and went by several different surnames:
Feus Schuster on the ship manifest, Seymore Schuster in the
1860 census, and John Schuster in the 1870 census. Seymore's wife
was Zelia, born in France about 1807, and they undoubtedly married
either in Bavaria or Switzerland as Stephen was born in Bavaria. Seymore
was a farmer in Allegany, New York, and he and his wife Zelia probably
died before the 1880 census was taken.
Stephen Schuster, Sr. married Mary Dorr about 1863 in New York.
Mary was born in France or Alsace about 1841. She immigrated in 1845, but
neither that record nor the names of her parents have been found. Stephen
was "working in Tammany" in 1870, but became a farmer in the town of Cuba
before 1880 where they were still farming in 1900. They then moved to
Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York, where both Stephen and Mary probably
died before 1920.
Stephen and Mary had eleven children, but only ten were living in 1900.
Their son
Stephen Schuster, Jr. married Emma___ and had children
Mildred Schuster, Ethel Schuster, Mary Schuster, and
John Schuster.
Their son Stephen Schuster died shortly before the 1920 census
was taken and his widow Emma removed to Buffalo, New York. In 1930 she was
renting at the same address as her daughter Mildred Heher and her
son-in-law John G. Heher. Also living with Emma were her unmarried
children Ethel and John.
