BIOGRAPHY
Philip Eschenfelder probably arrived in New York on August 4, 1840 and was a
tailor. He died before June 1860, but after 1854. We do not
know if he married before coming to America, but as all his children were
born in New York City he probably married after his arrival.
Philip and Mary had seven children:
Anna Bertha b. 1844-1845
Caroline b. 1845-1846
Marie b. 1847-1848
Margaret "Maggie" b. abt. 1852
Philip Jr. b. 1853-1854
Elizabeth b. 1854-1855.
Mary never remarried after Philip's death but raised her children by
herself. Life must have been hard for the family. In 1860 the
three oldest girls, Anna age 14, Caroline age 12, and Marie age 10, were
no longer in school but worked making artificial flowers. Anna
married in 1867, and in 1870 Caroline, Maria and Margaret all worked in
the "gold leaf business." Philip Jr. was also employed at this time
and only Elizabeth, age 12, was in school. Daughter Caroline married
next in 1870, Margaret married shortly thereafter and Elizabeth married in
1878. The only daughter not married was Maria who was still living
with her mother in 1880.
In 1880 Mary Eschenfelder was living with her son-in-law Anthony Sommer
[or Bommer], but the name of Anthony's wife, Olger F., doesn't match any
of the names of Mary's daughters. At this time Mary was working as a Nurse and her
daughters Maria and Maggie were "gold cutters."

The
name Eschenfelder is spelled in various ways which makes it difficult
to search. Philip's Naturalization Record is assumed to be the
correct spelling, as this is also the name on the marriage records of
three of his daughters. |
