BIOGRAPHY
John Alfred Cook, Sr. immigrated from England in 1865. On the ship
manifest he lists his occupation as "Barman." He must had funds to support
his business for in 1870, at the age of 24, he had a personal estate of
$2,000 and listed his occupation as "liquor business." Ten years later he
was in "liquor retail," and the family had a servant, Maggie Pigeon. In
1890 he was a hotelkeeper, and in 1900 was dealing in "real estate."
We find in his wife's probate that she owned the Sparta Hotel on Coney
Island. There was a theater at the hotel that showed silent movies, but no
other information could be found on it.
John A. Cook was obviously part of the social set. He is mentioned often
in the New York Times. Staying at the Propect House on Shelter Island,
August 20, 1908, are mentioned Mr. and Mrs. John A Cook, Dr. Albert E.
Cook and Roy Cook.
John Cook moved to Miami, Florida in the 1910s and must have been a
successful businessman. In 1930 his Miami home on home N E 37th Street was
valued at $75,000, a very appreciable amount in that day.
John married
Susan Pierson about
1874-75. Her family was living in Clarkstown, New York, up the
Hudson River, and John was living in Brooklyn, so it's
not clear how and where they met. John and Susan retired in Miami,
Florida, where we find them living in 1920 and 1930.
John and Susan had four children: John
AlfredCook Jr., b. 29 Jan 1876, Albert Edward Cook,
b. 10 Mar 1878, Florence M. Cook, b. Jul 1881,
Edna
Cook, b. Jun 1884, and
Roy Jennings Cook, b. 23 Aug 1893. John
died in Miami in 1933 and his body was returned to Brooklyn, where as he was
buried in Greenwood Cemetery. His wife
"Susie" and children Albert and Edna were also buried in the same lot
along with his son-in-law and daughter Clarence and
Florence Beecher.
