BIOGRAPHY
According to Ryk Brown, Jacob Lutes was the son of George Lutes,
born in the Highlands of Germany, and Hannah Ostrander, born in the
Low Lands, Netherlands. They came first to either New Jersey or
Pennsylvania moving to the Niagara area of Ontario, Canada. Family lore
claims they came from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but records have not been
found to support this. Jacob was the tenth of George and Hannah’s thirteen
children, born in Willoughby, Welland County, Ontario.
The McAlpine manuscript states Jacob Lutes married Janette McAlpine
February 11, 1834, while Janette was living in Thorold Township. They left
soon thereafter for the Township of Ancaster where they lived one year
before locating in Canboro, where they lived three years. They then went
to South Pelham where they lived on their farm for thirty years. They sold
the farm and settled on the Niagara River three miles from Chippewa where
they were still living in 1882. In the manuscript Jacob is described as
follows. "Jacob Lutes an uneducated man of much natural ability and very
just and honest; and of great firmness of character, industrious and
thrifty, and they are very well mated and comfortably situated couple and
nearing the end of lifes journey."
Jacob and Janette did not belong to an established church, which was not
that unusual. The 1851 census has nothing entered in the column
"religion," and a notation states "No Church Marked in Column is to be
understood not favourable to any Church." The 1861 census states "No
Church," the 1871 census states "Protestant," and the 1881 census states
"Methodist." The death certificates for both Jacob and Jenette list their
denomination as just Protestant.
In 1851 the family was living in a "log" home and owned 117 acres of land
on which they grew wheat, oats, indian corn, and potatoes. They owned 2
"bulls, oxen or steers," 3 "Milch Cows," 2 "calves or heiffers," 2 horses,
3 pigs, and 12 sheep. At the time of the census they had 12 bales of hay,
8 yards of fennel, 28 pounds of wool, 300 pound of butter, and 312 pounds
of pork.
Jacob and Janette had five children: John J.,
David, Sarah, Richard and Mary.
