BIOGRAPHY
Although not proven, Henry may be the son of Conrad Vogel, born
about 1817 in Prussia. We find Conrad in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, as a
carpenter or framer. In 1860 his wife was Hellen and his children were
Henry, William, Frederick and George. In 1880 his wife was Ellen and the
children were William, Frederick, George, Conrad and Robert. Conrad Vogel
was naturalized October 21, 1851, so he probably arrived in the early
1840s. In 1857 Conrad Vogel was listed in Trow's NYC directory as
carpenter, living at 140 E 41st Street
Henry C.
Vogel married Emily C.___.in October, 1870. In December, when
the census was taken, Henry was a clerk in a glass store. They were not
found in the 1880 census. Henry and Emily were given a surprise thirtieth
anniversary party in October, 1900. "Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Vogel
were agreeably surprised on the thirtieth anniversary of their wedding by
a visit of the Eureka Progressive Euchre Club, at 353 Fourteenth street.
The evening was passed in the usual enjoyable manner in the playing of
games and presentation of numerous presents in commemoration of the event
by the euchre club and other guests. Mrs. H. A. Ashwell and Mrs.
Pierson were the lucky winners of first and second prizes, among the
women, while Theodore Dunham and John A. Cook, sr., were the
fortunate ones among the men. The club then proceeded to the annual
election of officers and elected the following: Henry A. Ashwell,
president, Theodore H. Dunham, secretary, and Henry C. Vogel,
treasurer. After the meeting the members and guests partook of a
collation. Among those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Ashwell,
Mr. and Mrs. John A. Cook, jr.; Mr. and
Mrs. Theodore H. Dunhan, Mr. and Mrs. William Kennedy,
Mr. and Mrs. John A. Cook jr. [sr.];
Mr. and Mrs. P. Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. G. Aston, Mr. and Mrs. George W.
Vogel, Benjamin Boning, Mrs. M. Pierson [widow of
Edward Pierson], Mrs. S. Fielding,
Arthur Fielding."
As neither Henry C. Vogel nor his wife Emily could be identified in the
1910 census it's unclear when Henry passed away. His widow Emily was
living in Miami, Florida with her daughter and son-in-law John and Emily
Cook.
