BIOGRAPHY
Gottlieb Ernst was born in Switzerland in 1845 and came with his wife and
six children to New York City in 1881. On the ship roster his occupation
is "merchant," but in the 1900 census he is a "carpenter." The ship
roster is little help as it does not give any names other than Ernst and
the ages of the family members. We know from the 1900 census that he had
children George (Gotlieb, Jr.), Rose and Josephine, and that his wife
Susan had born thirteen children, but only six were living. The birth
record for Rosa names her parents as Gottlieb Ernst and Susana Maierhofer.
