BIOGRAPHY
Frederick C. Bissinger was born in Baden, Germany, and stated he immigrated
in 1861, but he probably came earlier as this was the year he married
Catharina Klecher, the mother of his four children. She must have died
in the 1870s as he married second, in 1879, Catherine Schepple / Schoepples.
The names of Friedrich's parents comes from this marriage record sited on familysearch.org.
Frederick went by various combinations of names. His second marriage record
gives his name as Christoph F. Bissinger. The 1870 and 1880 censuses lists
him as Frederick, and in 1900 he is Christ F. Bissinger. There is no doubt
these are all the same man, especially as they lived on the same block of
6th Street in both 1880 at 521 6th St., in 1900 at 524 6th St.,
and in 1910 his widow "Katherina" was still living at this address.
Also, in all censuses
he is a shoe maker. Frederick's second wife
Katherine was probably Frederica Catherine as in 1900 she is enumerated as
Frederick C. Bissinger, and we have a death record for a Fredrick Bissinger
that matches her birth year.
Frederick Bissinger and Catherina Klecher had four children, Barbara Bissinger b. abt. 1864,
Frederick George Bissinger, b. 22 May 1867, Caroline
Bissinger b. abt. 1868, and William Bissinger.
It would appear from the 1900 census that only two of the children were
still living.
Friedrich's son
George Bissinger was born 22 May 1867, and was christened as
"Friedrich Bissinger" in the First German Presbyterian Church on Rivington
St. He married Mary Nehse [possibly Nehes] May 1, 1892. He
lived in the Bronx and passed away January 29, 1900, leaving his widow Mary
with two children, a son George b. Dec. 1892, and a daughter born January or
June 1896. Mary Nehse may have been the daughter of Frederic and Margaret
Nehls / Nehes found in the 1880 census in Manhattan. Frederic Nehls was a
cabinet maker, born in Mecklenburg.
