BIOGRAPHY

Letter from Jean Audrey Greenwold, daughter of Emil Christian Greenwold
I also remember my Dad. He use to worry in the Summers when the polio season came, (they didn't have a vaccine for polio at that time) and he wouldn't let us -- he & Uncle Oscar--leave the farm. (Us means Naomi, Ruth, my brother & me.)

Every year at Christmas Dad donned his Santa Suit. We four (us) didn't know it was Dad.  We spent all night waiting for the sound of sleigh bells and the prancing of reindeer hoofs.  We never heard them--then in a great moment on Christmas morning--bells rang and no matter how we had promised ourselves and each other not to leave the fireplace at Grandma's house; we ran - ran to the front lawn - the back lawn - to see - to see the sleigh and deer.

That's when it happened!  The sudden thud and the ho-ho-ho. Once again we had missed Santa and his coming down the chimney.  And there he stood -- ho ho hoing, all dressed in Santa's garb and a pack full of surprises on his back. Of course it was Dad - but even when we grew out of the believing we couldn't let go of the dream. I think Naomi let go of the Santa thing first.

Dad bought me my first two-wheeler bike and stayed up for hours in the evening, teaching me how to ride the darn thing. When I took off on my own he shouted & clapped. He bought me a dog (puppy) when I was 8.  When [my daughter] Jackie was born the puppy was old and arthritic.

[When] Dad found out I was expecting a baby he sent me a large surprise.  Delivery of a tremendous bouquet of fresh flowers and a hand written note.  He said in the letter that life began with children of your own and that was one of the blessings of life....

Dad died at home--Bay Ridge Ave. in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.  I was with Mother....Later I ran to Aunt May's & Uncle Oscar's home at 7525 Shore Road to tell them of Dad's death.
