BIOGRAPHY
As the Frey family arrived in the 1860s and Katherina was a widow in 1870,
we do not know if Edward Frey made the trip to America or died before the
family's arrival.
Edward Frey, Sr. and his wife Katherina Waller had six children:
Julia Frey, Mary Frey, Edward Frey
Jr., Antonia
Frey, Joseph Frey and Mary Frey, all of whom were born in
Austria, probably in the same region of Plzen.
The only record in the United States found for Edward Sr.'s family is the 1870
census, when Katherina Frey, widow, was living alone with her six children. As
the family had only recently immigrated in 1866, it must have been difficult for
her to support her young family.
Joseph Frey, son of Edward Frey, Sr., was still not married in 1900
and was employed in cigar manufacturing in the Bronx. At this time
William and Elizabeth Bissinger were
living in the same building with him on 163rd Street, and it appears Joseph
responded to the census taker as the Bissinger names are not consistent with
other censuses.
